Spotted / Oakland, CA / Fentons
To kick off the start of summer I’m taking you inside Fentons, the oldest creamery west of the Mississippi. Located in Oakland’s Piedmont area, this institution has been family-owned since 1894 and continues to serve its world famous sundaes and sauces to this day. It still retains its classic, old-timey feel with its retro soda fountain, counter seating and banquettes. Over 50 unique flavors are handmade on site—and you can peek through the glass window to see how they’re all made or schedule an “arctic tour“. The latter is perfect for the kiddos…and us big kiddos, too. If you’re going big on a sundae (and I mean BIG!), you order the Banana Special. The Black & White and Black & Tan are my favorites. Even a single scoop will take you far—they’re very generous with their portions. They also serve savory classics for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And you can order ice cream cakes for special celebrations, too.
A second location was opened almost ten years ago at the Nut Tree further north in Vacaville.
