There is no shortage of dining options to choose from in San Francisco. Restaurants, pop-ups, food trucks, delivery services…you name it, we’ve got it. But have you heard of EatWith? It’s a great alternative to the restaurant scene providing locals and out-of-towners an opportunity to enjoy gourmet meals prepared by established/up-and-coming chefs in their home kitchen + meet new friends at the same time. Over 150 cities in the world are hosting these events and there are plenty here in SF. Simply preview all the menus and chefs online, then pay once you reserve a spot with tip already included. The host will then contact you with final details and their home address prior to the dinner. And you can BYOB, too.

Recently I attended a dinner with Don, a fishmonger-turned-home chef in San Francisco. Running the seafood program for a number of farmers markets, he has extensive knowledge of locally harvested seafood and sustainable fishing practices. He is especially known for his sold-out crab feast and black cod dinners—the latter which I attended. Don and his girlfriend Allie hosted the event in their lovely home in the city’s Ingleside district. A dozen other guests (all from other cities and countries) and I gathered in the kitchen for a meet-and-greet over bubbly and oysters. After a warm introduction by Don, we then convened in the dining room as he prepared a multi-course meal comprised of miso soup, edamame and trout salad, spot prawn, miso-glazed cod, a surprise sampling of gooseneck barnacle, and a chocolate mousse dessert. The food was delicious and filling, the guests were friendly and entertaining, and Don and Allie were perfect hosts. A fun and flavorful experience for sure! I’ve got to check out his crab feast next.
