Spotted / Oakland, CA / Dona Tomas
My favorite spot for really delish, authentic Mexican food outside of SF! I had attended a friend’s Cinco de Mayo dinner event at Dona Tomas and had to return for another visit, as everything was just so yummy. Also I kept hearing folks rave about their chilaquiles verde—which happens to be my favorite Mexican dish!—so had to give it a try. And oh Dios mío! They were right. It tasted just like the one I enjoyed every morning on a recent trip to Tulum. And it also happens to be the very first thing listed on the brunch menu, too. There are plenty of tasty dishes to choose from, but what makes everything that good is that they recreate favorite regional dishes from Mexico using authentic and hard to find ingredients (like certain chiles) and as much fresh, organic and local produce that is available + sustainably raised meats, too. Expect the menu to change and new seasonal dishes to try from time to time. But the chocolate dipped churros will always be available, so be sure to save room for those each time.
Dona Tomas is located alongside Temescal Alley, so you can peruse those shops after brunch or before dinner. There’s also plenty of seating in the main dining room, in the crimson bar and out back in the cheery patio.
