The next time you venture across the Bay Bridge, stop by for a tour and tasting at St. George Spirits in Alameda.  Located on the former naval base in a 65,000 square foot hangar, the distillery produces small batches of craft spirits including gins, vodkas, whiskey, bourbon, absinthe, rum, fruit brandies, and flavored liqueurs. St. George has been operating since 1982, but it was only in 2004 when they moved into this facility. I’m no connoisseur by any means, so it was great to tour the stills, fermentation tanks and barrels while learning about the production process and all that goes into crafting each of the spirits. You’ll also get the scoop on the giant shark they have in there. The tasting that follows is a fun and flavorful experience. There are many selections to choose from, but the tasting allows you to try six, so I recommend you bring a friend or two to choose different flavors so you can sample them all. Be sure to try the Christmasy-gin, the green chile vodka and both the apple pie-tasting and coffee liqueurs.
