Taking you inside Tim and Erin Archuleta’s newest restaurant, ICHI Kakiya, a follow-up to their most excellent ICHI Sushi and NI Bar. This new spot is located down the block where the original ICHI Sushi was. “Kakiya” (which means oyster in Japanese) is the focus here, along with clams + other raw and steamed seafoods. There are additional cold and hot items to order on/off the menu, but a platter of oysters is the sure way to start. We did just that, then got everything off the hot menu, including the kabocha (squash) soup with crab, the lobster-crab rolls, the miso-marinated umi masu (grilled trout) and the uni (sea urchin), yuba and salmon roe dish. All were fresh, tasty and beautifully prepared—the latter one especially. It was like a seafood pasta, but with tofu noodles. Keep in mind that this is a quaint spot for oysters and light bar bites, so not ideal for big groups expecting big meals. However it’s perfect for catching up with a friend or even a date night. Oh and they have a happy hour, too.
