Have you ever wondered how your favorite treats are made? Here in San Francisco, Miette is my go-to spot for sweets of all kinds. There are a couple of shops in the city, including the one featured here, plus another over in Marin. Across the Bay Bridge in Oakland is where the bakery is located and where all the cakes, cupcakes, tarts, cookies, caramels and what I think are truly the best macarons are made. Recently I stopped by the bakery to meet the small team behind Miette and get a peek into all the sweetness happening in their kitchen. As I know many of you are just as big a fan of Miette as I am, I wanted to share a little bit of that experience with you here.

Since 2001 owner Meg Ray has been providing the Bay Area with her simple and modern take on classic American cakes, pastries and confections. Using only the finest and freshest ingredients, including much that is local, organic and sustainably produced, lends to the exceptional quality and taste of all her goods. Even the design and packaging is very thoughtful, too. During my visit I observed the precision in layering and frosting of one of her signature cakes, the boiling and prepping of caramels, the molding and dusting of marshmallows, and the forming and cooling of macarons. Items like cakes and cupcakes are prepped earliest in the morning to ensure they get out to the stores; cookies, caramels and such soon follow. New items and flavors are introduced based on what’s fresh and seasonal—and summer time calls for lots of strawberries in the mix. Although the Oakland bakery is not open to the public, it has an adjoining shop where you can purchase many of these goodies, too. And don’t forget candy is also a big part of Miette and you’ll find each location with jars and bags full of all kind.

I hope you enjoyed this little behind-the-scenes into one of SF’s most beloved bakeries. And thank you to Miette and my friend, Melissa, for providing this opportunity. I hope to bring many more experiences like this to you on the site. Until then have a sweet day everyone!
