Spotted SF / Alcatraz + Ai Weiwei
Every now and then I crave a bit of a break and find myself wandering around the city for a little inspiration—perhaps revisiting some familiar places or stumbling onto something new. Just around the holidays I decided to hop on the first morning ferry and took a trip over to Alcatraz. I’ve visited in the past and have always been fascinated by the history of the island. But on this particular weekday morning while most folks were lining up to tour the prison cells, I ventured over to an area of the island I’ve never been to see a couple of the Ai Weiwei installations. And for a good half hour I had the entire place all to myself to do some shooting and exploring. I’ve always loved the softness of the light here and the stillness of each space. And the exhibit I found to be quite colorful and complex. I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to do a fair write-up to describe all the components of the artist’s work which is spread through different parts of the island, but you can read more about it here. The Ai Weiwei exhibit can be viewed through April 26th.
