Spotted / Montreal / St-Viateur Bagels
So I tried the two competing bagel places in Montreal, and I have to say I prefer the St-Viateur over the Fairmount ones. Again I can’t make a fair comparison after just one visit, but after eating a whole wheat bagel from both, I found the St-Viateur ones smaller, chewier and so much sweeter that I didn’t even need to add a spread. However both beat out fluffy San Francisco ones any day. I observed the process and saw that each bagel is hand-rolled, boiled, then baked using wooden paddles in a wood oven. And that last part is key, as regular ovens make the bagels at home balloon up and hole-y. Fortunately these guys operate 24/7 and ship to the U.S. And they’re available at the Montreal airport, too.
