During my trip to NYC a few weeks ago, I made it a point to stop by the Shinola flagship store in TriBeca. Shinola is a Detroit-based company that has been making quite the buzz by reigniting the spirit of manufacturing in the U.S., especially in old Motor City. The company headquarters is even housed in the brick building where every General Motor car was designed and where a number of other notable goods were produced. If the name rings a bell, the original Shinola was an American shoe polish used during the first half of the 1900s. The existing company purchased the name and today designs and manufactures a handsome line of watches, bicycles, leather and paper goods, and even shoe polish, too. More about their story can be found here.

I first heard about Shinola while perusing the display cases at my local Steven Alan here in SF. The green face of one watch caught my eye and I’ve been proudly sporting it ever since.
