A few weeks ago marked the one-year anniversary of Spotted SF and to celebrate I was planning to invest in a new camera + some lenses to take my photo-taking skills up a notch in 2014. I had been using a Nikon D3200 as a starter DSLR this past year and I was now ready to try my hand at shooting in full-frame. The first question was: Do I stick with Nikon or do I give Canon a try?  And immediately the next was: How do I know which model is right for me? After all, buying a camera and all the equipment is a big investment. And that’s when I heard about Lumoid, a small, local San Francisco-based company that makes it easy and affordable to rent and try out professional photography gear. They offer a wide variety of camera bodies, lenses and accessories + a bunch of fun kits (camera bodies coupled with the right lenses) for specific shooting purposes, like The Freshman if you’re a newbie and Foodie to capture yummy dishes.

Luckily they had the two cameras and all the lenses I had been contemplating, so I rented two separate kits: one included the Nikon D800, the other a Canon 5D Mark III. And I’m so glad I had a chance to try both options because in the end, the Canon model turned out to be much more user-friendly for me. I definitely recommend this try-before-you-buy option before investing in a new camera. And if you do end up buying with them, a good percentage of your rental sub-total can be used as a credit towards the purchase of new or used equipment. Whether you just need a weekend rental or are ready to buy, the folks at Lumoid have made the ordering and delivery process super easy and convenient. And everything arrives perfectly packaged, too.

I’m so looking forward to exploring more of San Francisco and hitting the road with my new gear. And I hope you enjoy all the upcoming photos I’ll be posting on my site. If you’re interested in trying out some fun new gear, check out Lumoid  here.
